As We Remember . . .

Mrs. Gwendolyn N. Williams of 3644 McConnell Rd. Greensboro, NC departed her earthly journey on Saturday, February 16, 2019 at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro, NC.   She was born in Forsyth County on December 8, 1938 to the late Thelma Norwood Holtzclaw and Willie Gray Anthony. Mrs. Williams graduated from Carver Consolidated High School in 1957. She attended Winston-Salem State University and Forsyth Technical Community College. She joined Center Grove AME Zion Church in Tobaccoville at an early age.   She later changed her membership to her present church, Galilee Missionary Baptist Church.  At Galilee, she participated in the Senior Ministry, usher board and volunteered in the church office.

Mrs. Williams retired after 30 years as a Technician at AT&T Lucent Network System.  She was very active with the CWA Union at AT&T. She was a Tax Preparer for Watson Tax Associates, a counselor with Goodwill Industries of Northwest NC, and a Shuttle Driver for Winston- Salem State University earning her CDL license at the age of 70 years old. She recently retired as an Administrative Assistant with the North Carolina Black Repertory Company.

Gwen was a member of: The Ladies of Excellence Red Hat Society, Rise and Fly Card Club, the National Black Theatre Festival Marvtastic Society and the Founder and Chairperson for the Tobaccoville Community Reunion. She loved her North Carolina Black Repertory Company family, was an avid traveler, loved to laugh and work with youth and seniors.

Preceding her to her heavenly home were one daughter, Jacquelyn "Jackie" Claiborne; two brothers, Nathaniel and Charles Norwood; and her beloved husband, Mr. Charles Williams.

She leaves behind to cherish her memories one daughter, Ms. Beleita Taylor; grandsons, Karif (Cyrita) of Charlotte, NC, Quentin Claiborne, and Jelani Claiborne of Richmond, VA; stepdaughter, Kim Lloyd of Durham, NC; stepson, Jerado (Charleen) Lomax of Eden, NC; one great-granddaughter, Eve Simone; one great-grandson, Kingston; one sister, Sylvia Sprinkle-Hamlin; one brother, Arthur (Peculiar) Sprinkle; a foster mother, Mrs. Mattie Glenn; and several nieces and nephews, loving relatives, devoted church members and close friends.

As we continue to breathe life we shall abundantly utter the memory of "Auntie Gwen's" many fine qualities.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, February 22, 2019 at Galilee Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Nathan E. Scovens, Sr. officiating.  Interment will follow in the Center Grove AME Zion Church Cemetery, Tobaccoville, NC.  The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Friday at the Church.
