Gwendolyn Lee Fonville Campbell was born in Philadelphia, PA to the proud parents of Mr. Herbert Lee Fonville and Ms. Georgia Elsie Burrell on Friday, October 9, 1953 and she departed on Wednesday, January 22, 2025.
Gwen graduated from Atkins Senior High School in 1971. She continued her education by completing an Associate's Degree from Droughon Business College and Pierce Junior College in 1976 and 1977 respectively. She was an administrative assistant for over 35 years at various companies and organizations, but more importantly at local universities that included Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State; in which 20 of those years were working for different government agencies before retiring from the Federal Aviation Administration in 2016.
Over the years, Gwendolyn spent time volunteering at the Eglin Air Force Base Vacation Bible School (FL), along with the Battered Women's Shelter and Red Cross here in Winston-Salem. As a child, she was a member of the Girl Scouts and enjoyed being part of the local community.
Gwendolyn was a long-standing member of First Baptist Church and was a member of the Women's Progressive Club, but more importantly, here is where she married her high school sweetheart, James E. Campbell on August 18,1973. They were married for 39 years before he preceded her in death on September 28, 2012.
Gwendolyn, affectionately known as "Gwennie", was beloved by many family and friends, and more importantly known for baking from scratch various cakes, pies and banana pudding, for all to enjoy. Gwen was extremely fond of attending plays and theatre productions during the National Black Theatre Festivals, where she would also occasionally volunteer; in addition to, shopping for fashionable attire to wear for the local events.
Gwendolyn is survived by her daughters, Deiara LaVon Campbell and Devon C. Rollinson (David); son, Damien Lawrence Campbell; granddaughter, Bryndal Elise Campbell; brother, Maurice Lee Fonville (Katrina); along with a host of nieces, cousins and dear family and friends.
A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Friday, January 31, 2025 at Russell Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Saturday, February 1, 2025 at First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 1:30pm on Saturday at the Church.
