Gwendolyn Armstrong was the daughter of Booker T. and Beatrice Armstrong. She was born April 18, 1939 in Shelby, North Carolina. She departed this life October 18, 2021. She was the oldest of 3 siblings, Joyce A. Rankings and Toni A. Brown, who preceded her in death.
She graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers' College (WSSU), where she received a Bachelor's degree in Education. She obtained Master's degrees from Columbia University in New York, NY and the University of Bridgeport, CT. She did advanced studies at the University of Bridgeport and Yale University.
In 1959, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in which their mission is to be of "Service to All Mankind".
In Connecticut, she served as a teacher, supervisor, and Principal in the Bridgeport School System. At Winston Salem State University, she served as Director of Sponsored Programs and Research. She worked closely with federal grant programs to support community initiatives. Once retired, she continued to serve as a consultant to federal programs as well as civic, religious, and educational organizations nationwide.
Throughout her life she has known the goodness of God, the Father, and the Holy Spirit. His Grace has been the guidance of her many successes and her faith in Him has carried her through many obstacles. She is in heaven now.
Gwendolyn is survived by her daughter, Marcia Armstrong; sister, Joyce Rankins; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and aunts.
There will be no public viewing.
Private graveside services will be held Friday, October 29, 2021.
