Gloria Yvette Crawford was born April 25, 1945 in Winston Salem, NC to Rev William R. and Gwendolyn Scales Crawford. She departed this life on Tuesday, July 5, 2011 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Sharon Eileen Crawford.
Gloria attended the local public schools, Skyland Elementary School, Atkins High School (class of 1963) and was a 1967 graduate of Hampton Institute in Hampton, Va. While attending Hampton, she was a foreign exchange student to Denmark. She was an active member of the Winston Salem graduate chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority.
Gloria was very active with and served as a past president of the NC Black Repertory Company's Guild Board. She was an active volunteer with the National Black Theater festival since its inception in 1989.
Gloria retired after thirty years with Forsyth County Social Services and was currently employed with WSFC School System.
Gloria is survived by one son Jamar Eller-Crawford; two surrogate daughters Lisa Brass (Eric, Sr.) of Hampton, VA and Jamailya Eller-Mathews of Germany; seven grandchildren, Jaylen, LaNaudia, Aaleeya, and Ronnie Crawford all of Winston Salem, NC, and Devan, Eric, Jr. and Nehemiah Brass of Hampton, VA; one aunt, Viola Scales Trent of Greensboro, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Memorial services will be conducted at 12noon on Friday, July 8, 2011 at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, 5095 Lansing Drive, Winston-Salem, NC with Bishop Sheldon McCarter officiating. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Friday at the Church.
The family will leave from the home 4500 Peter Pfaff Drive, Pfafftown, NC.
