Obituary

Gloria May Cornish Baldwin entered this journey on May 13,1931 and took her last earthly breath on January 11, 2025.

She was the eldest daughter of Jerome K. Cornish and Laura Gladdin Cornish. She was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Elwood Rudolph Baldwin; and her sisters, Elizabeth (Jackie) Cornish Bryant and Kathrine Cornish Armstrong.

She was the mother of two children, Laurie Allen Baldwin Werts (Pastor Caesar C. Werts) and John Elwood Baldwin. She was the grandmother of five grandchildren, Alease Nicole Allen (Moses Wright), Tara Mari Allen Powell (Brandon Powell), Britni Michal Allen, Emmanuel Obidiah Werts and Caesar Justin Werts. She is also the great grandmother of four.

Gloria graduated from Booton High School, New Jersey in 1945. She then went on to be awarded one of the Prestigious Jack Stern Awards for students graduating showing the highest professional and social adjustment. She also was Awarded one of 3 scholarships presented at High School Graduation and given a full scholarship to The School of Nursing of the Nathan and Miriam Barnet Hospital in Patterson, NJ, where she graduated with honors and became a registered nurse in 1955.

Gloria was also the recipient of a RN Certificate, a RN to Bachelor Science Degree, as well as a Master's Degree in Nursing. She was Head Nurse for the Emergency Department at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ. She went on to become Head Nurse of the Dialysis Department and then was promoted to Director of Nursing of the Dialysis Department in St. Barnabas Medical Center, Livingston, NJ.

She left St. Barnabas Medical Center to start her own business, Dialysis Assistant, Inc. supporting hospitals in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and Connecticut.

Gloria met the Lord in the early 1950s and worked faithfully in the churches she attended. She joined Macedonia Christian Church, Vauxhall, New Jersey in 1955. She also joined New Bethel Baptist Church, High Point, NC in the early 2000s.

She was awarded a certificate for Evangelism from Newark Bible School in 1965. She also formed an After School Bible School on Fridays during the school year from 4pm - 6pm, helping to reach children for Jesus Christ.

She received recognition as a Vacation Bible School Leader in 1964. She received a Registration Certificate from The Bible Club Movement, Inc. as a certified teacher of Adults and Children in 1967 and 1979.

While in New Jersey she formed a number of children's ministries. She worked as a Sunday School teacher and then the Sunday School Superintendent until her move to North Carolina in 1990.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, January 18, 2025 at New Bethel Baptist Church, 1116 Montlieu Ave, High Point, NC 27262 with Rev. Sherman Mason officiating. The family visitation will be held from 12:00noon until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Church.
