Obituary

Glasco "Bud" Mennaugh Rice, Sr., age 79, of Winston-Salem, NC, peacefully passed away at his home on Monday, June 30, 2025.

Born on February 23, 1946, Glasco proudly served in the United States Navy; where he received an honorable discharge and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He graduated from Atkins High School and later earned his Associate's Degree from Forsyth Technical Community College.

Glasco's professional journey included work at Sealtest Dairy, Hanes Corporation, and he retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Tobaccoville as a Senior Mechanic. During his time at RJR, he was recognized for his exceptional skill and speed, earning two awards as one of the fastest mechanics to repair cigarette manufacturing machines in Winston-Salem during his era.

Known by all as a "jack of all trades," Glasco could fix any car or truck and had a gift for building and repairing anything imaginable. He had a deep passion for mechanics and home revitalization and was often surrounded by curious bystanders amazed by his craftsmanship and ability to tackle any challenge. If someone's car broke down, Glasco was the one they called—always ready to help, never turning anyone away. During his early years, he participated in car racing in Piedmont and Farmington Dragway, in which he won several awards. Later, after retiring from RJR, he started A-1 Trucking company in which he had the opportunity to work on the Greensboro Urban Loop Project, known as I-840, along with several local demolition projects.

He leaves behind his devoted wife of 59 years, Anita Rice; two sons, Glasco M. Rice (Nina) and Darryl Rice (Tawana); one daughter, Akilah Shaw (Daryl); two sisters, Gladys Jones (Charles) and Peggy Hughes (Benjamin). He also leaves seven beloved grandchildren, Brittany Martin (Wes), Julisha Penn, Sequoia Best (Jahbari), Tashawn Hyatt, Keshawn Hyatt, Zoe Shaw, and Payton Shaw; in-laws, Barbara Brinkly, Patricia Crowell, Veronica Hughes, Wayne Crowell (Tonette), Christopher Crowell (Monica), James Crowell, and Ricky Crowell (Shenika).

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glasco Mennaugh Meeks and Inez Allison Rice; brothers, Clevester Rice, Willie Edward Rice, and Akil AI- Latif Muhammad; and in-laws, Napoleon Lee Crowell, Sr., Mary Alice Crowell, Jacob Hughes Jr., and Napoleon Crowell Jr.

Glasco's life was defined by service, skill, generosity, and love. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the honor of knowing him.
