Obituary

Gladys Hauser Palmer, 87, peacefully transitioned from this earthly pilgrimage on Tuesday, January 18, 2011 at her home after a protracted period of illness.
She was born on March 21, 1923 from the union of Ira Lee Crutchfield and Lena Hauser; she was a native of Forsyth County. She attended Atkins High School where she received her high school diploma in 1939.
After a brief employment with RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company, where she would subsequently meet her future husband, Albert Palmer, Sr., she retired to raise a family. From that union she conceived six children.
Mrs. Palmer was recognized in 2008 by the Mayor of Winston-Salem and other local dignitaries for her extensive work with the Forsyth County Board of Elections (over 30 years), where she served as a precinct judge before her health declined.
She was an avid member of Piney Grove Baptist Church where she served for many years on the Women's Progressive Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Palmer, Sr.; three sons, Melvin B. Palmer, Lindy C. Palmer, and Curtis E. Palmer; and one half-sister, Thelma Covington.
She is survived by one sister, Oreatha H. Clark; three children, Gloria P. Roseboro, Ira L. Palmer, and Albert Palmer, Jr., all of the city; three grandchildren, Darrell Roseboro, Melvin B. Palmer, Jr., and Terry Palmer; three great grandchildren, Whitnei Holman, Ryan Palmer, and Brendon Palmer; one great- great granddaughter, Adéya Holman; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Friday, January 21, 2011 at Piney Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. James Linville officiating. Interment will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:00pm on Friday at the church.
