Mrs. Gertrude Delores Pitt Phillips, 73, of 100 Azalea Terrace, Winston-Salem, NC departed this life on April 30, 2008 at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born on July 21, 1934 in Raleigh, NC to the late Lucille and Joseph Pitt. She graduated from Washington High School in Raleigh, NC.
Gertrude, affectionately known as "Red," resided in Washington, DC most of her adult life. She was a life-long in-home care giver. She moved to Greensboro, NC upon her retirement to live with her sister. In 2002 she moved to Winston-Salem, NC. She was baptized and became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She served faithfully on the St. Paul Sick and Shut In Ministry.
Preceding her in death was her brother, James Edward; two sisters, Josephine Williams and Annie Ruth Pitt; and her companion of 30 years, Harry Clinton Coleman.
She leaves to cherish her memories three devoted and loving children, a son, Dr. Thaddaeus Lorenzo-Joseph Phillips; two daughters, Joyce Johnson and Carolyn Gregg; three granddaughters, Rhonda Phillips Bullock, Brittany and Bria Gregg; one great granddaughter, Arianna Bullock all of Greenbelt, Maryland; two brothers, Clarence Allen (Lydia) Pitt of Atlanta, GA and Ernest H. (Elaine) Pitt of Winston-Salem, NC; a sister, Patricia Pitt Cunningham (Dennis) of Orlando, FL; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, May 6, 2008 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Pastor Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Greensboro, NC. Family visitation will be held from 11:30 am until 12 Noon at the Church.
