Mrs. Geraldine Cunningham, 83, of 1625 E. 3
rd
Street (University Place), went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 31, 2017. She was an active member of Zion Memorial Baptist Church where she regularly attended Sunday School, worked with the tutoring program where she read to the children and prepared meals. She was an active member of a host of church auxiliaries including the nurse's ministry, the missionary union and missionary ministry.
Geraldine Cunningham was born as Geraldine Martin to Willie Martin and Cleartis Davis on July 11, 1934 in Winston-Salem, NC. Geraldine married James E. Cunningham (Jay), who served in the U.S. Army. Geraldine traveled with Jay and her only daughter, Loretta, to the bases where Jay was stationed until he was honorably discharged in 1961. Anyone who knew Geraldine knew she loved people. She shared all she had with others and cared for everyone's child who crossed her path. She worked on the Mack-Leach Family Reunion Committee, and helped her cousin Jocelyn, who previously served as an alderman with voter registration. She prepared her famous homemade potato salad for baby showers, church activities and the community block parties.
To cherish her precious memory, Geraldine leaves her only daughter Loretta Smith; four grandchildren, Aliyur El Bey, Phillip Smith (Tracy), Maurice Smith (Renee), and Erica Bryant (Ajehwai); sisters, Christine Littleton (Atlanta), Mary Davis; brothers, Monroe Martin, and Arthur Will Davis; nieces, Belinda Chisholm, Benny Holmes, Sandra Martin, and Ann Martin; nephews, Carl Martin, Robert Miller, Antonio Miller; a precious great niece Tamara Martin; and a host of cousins, other family and friends
