Obituary

Georgiana McCoy peacefully transitioned to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 21, 2021. She was born March 16, 1933; the fourth of four children born to Sherman "Pike" Paige and Edith Lemly Paige in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

She graduated in 1952 from Atkins High School in Winston-Salem. She attended Winston-Salem Teacher's College, now known as Winston-Salem State University, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education in 1956.

Teaching, her chosen profession, spanned over 31 years. She taught in Charlotte, NC for one year and retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System after having taught for 30 years. Her rewarding teaching experience included being chosen as "Teacher of the Year" at Southwest Elementary School in 1984 and 1991. The West Area Council of the Greater Chamber of Commerce also honored her "Teacher of the Month" in 1991.

Mrs. McCoy was an active member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church, where she was ordained as a deacon on January 25, 2009. She also served as church clerk, Stephens Minister, Senior Missionary, president of the General Fellowship Club, a gospel choir member, member of the Ever Ready Bible Class, and regularly attended bible study and prayer service.

Mrs. McCoy was born and reared in Happy Hill, the oldest black community in Winston-Salem, NC. She worked diligently to preserve the history of Happy Hill. In 1997-1998 she served as a member of the "Across the Creek from Salem – the Story of Happy Hill" curational committee. This committee developed and produced a successful photo exhibition at the Gallery at Old Salem from February 7, 1997, through June 7, 1998. She received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Happy Hill Reunion Committee in 1996, 1997 and 1998 for her dedicated service to the children, community and city. The Winston-Salem Board of Alderman recognized her in a resolution for her work with the "Across the Creek from Salem" project in 1997. East Ward Alderman, Jocelyn Johnson, also presented her with a Certificate of Appreciation during the 1998 Happy Hill Reunion.

Mrs. McCoy has been awarded several certificates of recognition and appreciation. Her favorite community affiliations include Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Meals on Wheels and "On Track" Tutorial Program at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death in 2002 by her beloved husband of 44 years, Earl McCoy. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Earl, Jr.; and siblings, Magdalene, James, and Mary.

She leaves to cherish fond memories of her two children, Manya (Richard) Stewart and Sherman (Christina) McCoy; three grandsons, Scott Stewart, Brandon (LaToya) Stewart and Christopher Stewart; one great-grandchild, Savannah Paige Stewart; and special nieces, Princilla McGee, Faye Douglas and Stephanie Mosley.

A viewing will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Thursday, February 25, 2021, at Russell Funeral Home.

Private funeral services will be held Friday, February 26, 2021. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
