On Friday, January 10, 2014, Deacon Georgia Anna Dunlap, departed her life of ninety years with her daughter and son-in-law at her side. She experienced a brief illness and was being cared for at the Gilchrist Hospice Center in Towson, Maryland. She was born June 11, 1923 in Winston-Salem, NC to Porter and Fannie Dunlap.
She attended the public schools of Winston-Salem, NC and continued her studies in higher education. She earned an undergraduate degree in Education at Winston-Salem Teacher's College, now Winston-Salem State University and her Master's degree at New York University.
Ms. Dunlap spent the early years of her life as a teacher for over forty years in the North Carolina School System because of her love for children and her ultimate desire to help them to develop to their potential. One of her attributes was being an advocate for education to encourage young people to obtain a college degree. She naturally wanted them to attend her alma mater, Winston Salem State University in which she became a life member of the national alumni association.
She was very proud and pleased when her daughter Eleanor, great niece Dorinda and great nephew Booker graduated from her alma mater. The university wrote a news release for the local newspaper and as a result the chancellor recognized her at the 2012 commencement exercise for advocating and encouraging young people to attend WSSU.
Ms. Dunlap was a lifetime member and ordained deacon at the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church having served through the years as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school pianist, Vacation Bible School director, Board of Christian Education, choir member, and the Amanda Galloway Aide Society which was close to her heart.
Her favorite quote was "Be not dismayed what e'er be-tide, God will take care of you" in which she said testifying of God's goodness and mercy for all who believe. Her other affiliations were the life membership of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., New York Alumni association, the Ebony Hearts Bridge Club, the Brown Alumni Chapter of Winston-Salem State University, Forsyth County Deacons Union, and the Forsyth County Missionary Association. She also always attended the Lock Carey Annual National Baptist Convention while her health allowed her to do so.
Deacon Dunlap was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Porter Dunlap; her aunt, Naomi Morgan; two sisters, Mrs. Ida Martin and Mrs. Gloria Price; two cousins, William Carnell White and Mrs. Bernice Bouldin; brother-in-law, John Duckwilder; nephew, Marlon Martin; great nephew, Johnny Martin; and great niece, Fannie Price.
She leaves to celebrate her life her daughter, Mrs. Eleanor (Shadrach) Golden of Windsor Mills, Maryland; one sister, Mrs. Rubye K. Duckwilder of Washington, DC; two nephews, Robert Lee Martin of High Point, NC and Frederick (Doris) Martin of Winston-Salem, NC; three nieces, Mrs. Deloris (Bobby) Gwyn; Mrs. Mable (Irvin) Shakir both of Winston-Salem, NC, and Mrs. Sharon Wiggins of Lexington, NC; two close cousins, Mrs. Ophelia Stephens of Washington, DC and Mrs. Doris Watson of New York; and a host of great nieces, great nephews, other relatives, and friends.
