George Wesley Ledbetter, Jr. was born on June 25, 1954 in Washington, DC to George W. Ledbetter, Sr. and Catherine White. George transitioned from this earth on Thursday, March 31, 2016.
George Sr. brought "Georgie-boy" to North Carolina to live with his uncle Oscar Leak and aunt Mary Ledbetter Leak who adopted him as their son. "Georgie-boy" would immediately gain a new family.
He received more brothers and sisters, James (Ale) James Oscar, Mary Elizabeth, Raymond, Bernice, Catherine, Hazel, George (Eugene), Hazel, and Betty Lou, He also gained cousins that would become like brothers. It would be his cousins that would form a quartet group called The Salemnaires; George loved to sing and could sing until you felt the power of GOD. Mr. Ledbetter had a love for bowling, horses, hunting, football and most of all "TRUCKING"
George graduated from North Davidson High School. He was savvy and worked for several companies before finding his way to trucking. He went on to enjoy a life long career in trucking and started two trucking companies. His last place of employment would be with his lifelong friend Bill Carr Sr. and Carr Trucking.
George was preceded in death by his fathers, Oscar Leak and George Ledbetter, Sr.; and his mothers, Mary Leak and Catherine White. Before leaving this earth, George said "He was ready and he would be taking his seat with Junie - boy, Cile and Alec.
George left this earth surrounded by his children, Keith Wesley Ledbetter, Demetria Shantae Ledbetter, and God-daughter Claudette Lindsay (Pastor Clyde); George was blessed to have his sisters & brothers praying for him during his time of sickness, Catherine Hughley, Hazel Speight, Bernice Hairston and Raymond Leak; Mr. Ledbetter leaves three other siblings, Lawrence Myers, Marie and Lorretta Woods. George leaves a praying family of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly. Deacon Ledbetter leaves his church Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church and the outreach ministry with a charge to build a new church edifice. He also left a challenge for the youth ushers to give God their best. "Deac" will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 1:30pm until 2:00pm on Wednesday at the Chapel.
