George Fennell, Jr. was blessed to ascend to Heaven to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 10, 2009. He was born in the city of Winston-Salem on July 30, 1942 to the late Mr. George Fennell, Sr. and Emma Presley Fennell. George was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1961. He enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from high school. After serving honorably for four and a half years, he furthered his education at Russell Business School. He was employed by the Winston-Salem Housing Authority as a Supervisor of Maintenance. Upon retiring after 30 plus years of dedicated service, he worked sparingly with Show Pros entertainment service working special events as an event staffer.
George was very actively involved in the community. He was involved with Pop Warner Football as a coach for the Tiny Vikings. In addition, he volunteered as a Community Service Coordinator for Juvenile Youth. George was a tireless mentor for the youth. He was a member of the Carolina Cruisers Motorcycle Club, HAWS retirement club, and recently he joined the Buffalo Soldiers, Las Vegas Chapter and participated in many other community activities. "G", as he was often referred, was beloved by the entire community.
George was a devoted husband, father, and mentor who will be deeply missed by his family.
He is survived by his childhood sweetheart and loving wife of 45 years, Shirley McCall Fennell; cherishing his wonderful memories now and always are his three children, Lt. Colonel Robert (Tina) Fennell of Colorado Springs, CO, Lisa Fennell and Anthony (Tomika) Fennell both of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Brittany, Robert, Jr., Carlissa, Breanna, Stephany, Denard, Marina, and Brookelynn Fennell; he will be fondly remembered by his sisters, Ethel Fennell Brown and Willie Mae Fennell Hale; sisters-in-law, Nelsie McCall Wright and Brenda McCall; brother-in-law, Ralph L. Newell, Sr.; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2pm Tuesday, December 15, 2009 at St. John's CME Church with Reverend Joseph B. Parks officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held fom1pm until 2pm on Tuesday at the Church.
