Surrounded by his loving family, Garry Ray Flynt transitioned to his heavenly home in the early morning of September 24, 2022. Best remembered for his unwavering love and devotion to family, Garry was born the first of five children to James Edward (deceased) and Iva Lee Warren Flynt on August 28, 1951, in Stokesdale, North Carolina, where he spent most of his early childhood years.
At an early age, Garry was baptized and was a member of Oak Spring Baptist Church. He was educated in Catholic schools in San Antonio, TX, as well as the North Carolina Public School System, graduating in 1969 from Northwest Guildford High School, Greensboro, NC. He earned his associate's degree in computer programming from ECPI University in Greensboro, NC, which served him well when he joined the United States Army in 1971.
One of the organizations he supported with time and funds was the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. He was particularly drawn to helping homeless Veterans secure permanent housing.
Serving in the U.S. Army approximately 21 years, Garry rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant and served as a Senior Telecommunications Center Supervisor. His Army service included four overseas tours of duty including Bad Tölz, Germany; Bad Kreuznach, Germany; Korea; and Saudi Arabia. In the United States, Garry was stationed at Fort Gordon, GA; Mountain View, CA; Fort Huachuca, AZ; and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. His military decorations included two Meritorious Service Medals and three Army Commendation Medals. Following his honorable Army discharge, he joined Volvo IT in Greensboro, NC, as a Senior Personal Computer Specialist until his retirement in 2017.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Edward Flynt; his maternal grandparents, Myrtle and Earlie Warren; and paternal grandmother, Roxie Flynt Carroll.
Survivors include his mother, Iva Lee Flynt; siblings, Myrna Flynt Farmer of Chicago, Illinois, James Allen Flynt, Sr, (Vonda) of Stokesdale, North Carolina, Lynn Flynt Williams (Williford) of Cumming, Georgia, and Dr. Sherrie Flynt Wallington of North Bethesda, MD; nephew, James Allen Flynt, Jr.; and the family's cherished miniature dachshund, Iris, whom he adored. He is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins from the Warren, Frazier, and Carroll families, as well as many dear friends.
Garry enjoyed time with his family and friends, especially as an avid chess player, whether in tournaments or with local expert chess players in Winston-Salem. Billiards was another avid interest where he and his Winston-Salem Cue and Spirit team won a variety of trophies in local tournaments. He also enjoyed an occasional golf game at the Winston-Lake Golf Course. All his games exercised his mental acumen to develop winning strategies. He was also a member of the vintage Fiero Car Club.
His sense of humor easily identified Garry's heart—he would say often "I am so glad my family are my friends, and my friends are my family." His daily Facebook posts always brought smiles and laughter to start others' days and many eagerly anticipated his sense of humor.
Graveside services with full military honors for Garry will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, October 5, 2022 in Salisbury National Cemetery, Salisbury, NC. There will be no public viewing.
The family wishes to thank the physicians, nurses, and staff of Novant Health and Atrium Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Department of Neurology and the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging and Rehabilitation for the excellent care and attention to Garry and his family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Garry Ray Flynt to the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission by contacting Bryceton Proctor at bryceton.proctor@wsrescue.org or call (336) 723-1848, ext. 139.
