Obituary

On January 4, 1930, in a small town called Tignall, Georgia, Mr. Willie and Emma Jones were blessed to give birth to Frances Patricia Mack, whom today we affectionately known as "Mother Mack." God-fearing, passionate, nurturing, and caring for many, she was born into family where her siblings were the love of her life. They are Bill, Watson, Susan, Allen, Jacob, Hiram, Isaiah, Dollie Mae, Ralph, Fannie, and Emma Lee. All whom preceded her in death.

When she was just a child, a fire destroyed all of their property in Georgia, and the entire family moved to Lexington, North Carolina, where they would live with a relative while re-establishing the foundations of their belongings and embracing the optimism of new start with life earnings.

While in the City of Lexington, she attended the Lexington City Schools, where her mother was her grade schoolteacher, and later became a proud graduate of Dunbar High School. Frances and her sister Fannie were very close in age and school years. Because her parents could not afford to send both away to Howard University for higher education, Frances elected to let Fannie pursue her dreams as a pharmacist, while she would remain closer to home and attend Kate Bitting Nursing School (Katie B). She graduated from the Kate Bitting Reynolds School of Nursing Winston-Salem, NC, completed the certification program at Winston-Salem State University, and supervisory training at Forsyth Technical Community College.  After completing an internship in Silver Springs, Maryland, she graduated from Nursing School in 1953, and served as an Assistant Head Nurse of the Female Surgical Unit, and Assistant Head Nurse of Orthopedics at Forsyth Memorial Hospital until her early retirement due to health challenges in 1980.

The Katie B Reunion Committee in 2019 named a Lifetime Nursing Excellence Award in her Honor, The Frances J Mack Legacy Award.

In 1954 she married Rev. Dr. Sir Walter Mack, Sr. Six children would be a blessing to these two. Belinda, her accepted daughter (deceased), Walteria (Clifton), Cynthia (Sackie), Monica (Mark), Sir Walter (Kim), and Christopher (Katina). She is the grandmother to four grandchildren, Mark, Jr. (Jackson), Me'lia (Kendall), Mashad, and Christina. She is also the covenant mother to Ms. Cheryl Lindsay.

Frances J. Mack has served as the First Lady of Emmanuel Baptist Church for thirty-three years and Buncombe Baptist Church for eighteen years.  Presently, she is noted as a mother and mentor to many of the members of Union Baptist Church and cherishes the role of being an intercessor and supporter of her son and pastor, Bishop Sir Walter Mack, Jr. for the past 20 years.

13th year survivor of breast cancer and the impetus behind the Frances J. Mack Cancer survivor Faith Walk & Fashion show, she was a strong supporter of Worship, Bible Study, and the work of missionaries. Many notable pastors and musicians have been graced by her presence and love. Dr. Gardner C. Taylor, Dr. William Augustus Jones, Dr. Harold Carter, Sr., Dr. Weptonomah Carter, Dr. Lorenzo Lynch, Dr. James Webster, Bishop Noel Jones, Ma Mosie Burke of the Mississippi Mass Choir, and Paul Porter, just to name a few.

Mother Mack has served as the wife to a pastor for 33 years, and the mother to a pastor for 30 years, which means collectively she has served on the front line of ministry for 63 years. As a First Lady and Mother to the Union Ministry, she has demonstrated values of hard work, service, and optimal character throughout her life, always maintaining the ultimate conclusion-God is in control.

She was known for her nurturing spirit, beautiful personality, and comforting smile.  Her spirit and character have been praised as ``nothing short of magnificent, sweet, and humble.'' Her Love of God and endless faith is to be applauded!  Her seasoned knowledge of diverse subject matters, her quick wit, sense of humor, and willingness to love and pray for everyone is to be celebrated.

She is survived by a host of nieces and nephews, and two in-laws, Hiawatha Mack and Reverend Claudette Mack. Mother Mack extended her life to so many, and the name names are too numerous to list.
