Obituary

Dr. Faustina Lee Holman was called home Friday, February 18, 2011 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Dr. Holman was born October 7, 1934 to the late Alvis Thomas and Willie Mae Holman. She graduated from Atkins High School. Dr. Holman received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Winston-Salem Teachers College. She continued her educational pursuits by earning a Master of Arts Degree in Music Education from New York University and a Doctorial Degree in Music Education from Temple University. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
During her illustrious musical career, Dr. Holman taught in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System, at Norfolk State University, and at Winston-Salem State University. Dr. Holman was a retired Professor of Music Education at Winston-Salem State University where she taught piano and other music education courses. She also served as an accompanist for the University Choir and student recitals. Dr. Holman was an administrator at the university.
Dr. Holman's love and passion for music was evident in her numerous church activities and community performances, as she displayed her talent as a masterful pianist. Her other outreach programs included the Arts for Tots Program at Winston-Salem State University and the Sacred Music Institute Program at both Mt. Zion Baptist Church and First Baptist Church (Highland Avenue). She also served as guest pianist and vocalist at several churches in the community. Dr. Holman organized the Hand Bell Choir at Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Dr. Holman was the author of the Mix and Match Piano Book and was working toward completion of her second publication at the time of her death.
She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., National Women of Achievement, and the Dorcas Missionary Group of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Dr. Holman was also affiliated with many musical organizations. She was highly respected in the music field and received many honors and recognitions.
Dr. Holman was a sweet sprit and loved life.
Dr. Holman is survived by one brother, Alvis Cato Holman of New Jersey whom she dearly loved; a loving and devoted sister, Patricia H. Emery of Greensboro, NC; a loving niece, Melanie Holman of New York; two aunts, Katherine Jeffers of Mocksville, NC/New York and Mary Bennett of Laurel, MD; cousins, Lazora Williams "Auntie Biddie" of Durham, NC, Dr. Baxter Wright of Itta Bena, MS, Catherine Jeffers of New York, Paul Williams (Almertia) of Durham, NC, Paula McAdoo (Terry) of Durham, NC, Marlowe Williams of New London, NC, Earlene Rush of Mocksville, NC, Charles Barker of Mocksville, NC Robin Cary Williams of Laurel, MD, James Wright (Shelia) of Mitchellville, MD, and Richard Todd Cary (Monique) of Lanham, MD; a devoted God-daughter, Letisha R. Jones of Pfafftown, NC; an extended family member, Veronica G. Jones of Pfafftown, NC; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Reverend Dr. Serenus T. Churn, Sr. officiating. Entombment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens.
