Mrs. Evelyn Benson Roberts departed this life to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday, March 5, 2011. Mrs. Roberts born July 12, 1918 to Ms. Mittie Benson Martin, was one of twelve children. A stepfather Wiley Penn Martin was influential in her life. She attended the local schools including Atkins High School. She entered the workforce early working for several years at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company and then worked seasonally for Winston Leaf Tobacco Company greater than twenty-five years.
She married Mr. George Wm. Hill Sr., and from that union was a son George Wm. Hill Jr.
Mrs. Roberts was a devoted daughter, parent and aunt of many nieces and nephews. She later married her high school sweetheart Mr. Earnest Calvin Roberts.
She was a long time member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Robert attended services faithfully until her health declined. She loved her Pastor and church family.
Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mr. Earnest Calvin Roberts; her mother, Mrs. Mittie Benson Martin; seven brothers, Babby, Cornelius, Hiawatha, Rexie, Leroy, twins Charles Lee and Arthur Lee Benson; three sisters, Almeta Benson, Ruby Mae Allen, and Virginia Pearson.
She leaves to cherish her memories her son, George Wm. Hill Jr. (Anne); a brother, Alphonso Benson (Wanda); a loving sister-in-law, Mrs. Clara Benson (the late Cornelius) of Baltimore, Maryland; one granddaughter, Cynthia Hill; three great-grandchildren, Darren, Alexander and Stanley Hill of the city; devoted nieces, Evelyn Gwyn (Cornell), Diane Benson Barber (Nathaniel), Edith Benson and Delores Benson of Baltimore, Maryland, Rose Anthony (the late Bobby Ray) of Winston-Salem, NC; devoted great-nieces, Carmen Kilgore (Ronald Jr.) Charlotte, NC, Jasmine Barber of the city; first cousins, Lovely King Hart of Winston-Salem, NC, George King of Philadelphia, PA, Lee Counsel, Lawrence, and Robert Greer of the city; and a host of family and friends although not named, were an important part of her life.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, March 11, 2011 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. James Cook officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Friday at the funeral home.
