Obituary

Eugene Monroe Campbell "Gene" passed away Monday, June 28, 2021 at Forsyth Medical Center. A native of Winston-Salem, Gene was born to James and Dardenella Campbell on November 12, 1943. He graduated from  Carver High School and did further study at Phillips Exeter Academy (prep school) before obtaining a degree in Arts and Sciences and Mathematics from the University of Connecticut.

Gene was employed by RJR Tobacco Company for over 30 years. While there he was called into service with the United States Airforce where he served his country in Vietnam. Upon return from the service, he continued his work with RJR as a Quality Control Specialist until his early retirement in 2000. He grew up in Union Chapel Baptist Church and later joined Hanes Christian Methodist  Episcopal Church. There he was a member of the Senior Men's Usher Board and was also a member of the Trustee Board until his death.

Gene enjoyed all sports but was an avid golfer until his illness prevented his enjoyment of his favorite pastime. In 2003, Gene was inducted into the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Olivia LaVerne Swinton. Gene is survived by his wife of 46 years, Gladys B. Campbell of Winston-Salem, NC; three children, James Eugene Campbell (Ashley) of Winston-Salem, NC, Christopher David Campbell of Charlotte, NC, and Kimberly Danielle Campbell of Winston-Salem, NC; one grandchild, Benjamin David Campbell of Winston-Salem, NC; two sisters, Deena C. McIntosh (Thurman) of Garner, NC and Anita C. Parker of Greenville, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hanes Memorial Christian Methodist Church. Donations may be made via cash app to $HanesCME or mailed to 819 N. Highland Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 6:00pm Friday, July 2, 2021 at Russell Funeral Home.

Private funeral services will be held Saturday, July 3, 2021. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Due to limited seating, the service will be live streamed on the Russell Funeral Home Facebook page starting at 1:00pm.
