Ethel Beatrice Hayes Walker departed this life on Monday, February 8, 2010. She was born on September 12, 1923 in Henderson, North Carolina to Cassie and Alexander Hayes. She graduated from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC in 1948, where she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Mrs. Walker enjoyed a long career as an educator, teaching in Louisburg, North Carolina, Franklin County and on the North Carolina coast in the small community of Leland, near Wilmington. She taught for over 20 years in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County schools, and enriched herself with further studies at Winston-Salem State University, Wake Forest University, and the University of New Mexico.
She was a member of Reynolds Temple CME Church in Winston-Salem, and for nearly 20 years attended St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Winston-Salem.
In 1951, she married Joseph Bernard Walker of Durham, NC, and four children were born of that union; Joseph Jr. (Rosalyn), Wende, Wesley (Sondra) and Gerald (Martaire).
She was preceded in death by her son, Joseph, Jr.; and her brothers Alfred and Edwin Hayes.
Mrs. Walker cherishes her husband; her three children; her daughter-in-law, Rosalyn; one sister, Dorothy Vance (Bob); one brother, Horace Hayes; as well as a host of grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at Noon Saturday, February 13, 2010 at St. John CME Church, 350 NW Crawford Place W-S, NC 27105. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until Noon on Saturday at the Church.
