Obituary

Mrs. Ethel Ruth Anderson of 2720 Kirkstone Drive, Winston-Salem, NC was born in Winston-Salem, NC on January 18, 1924 to McCoy Hall and Mrs. Bernadine Strange. She departed this life on Sunday, December 2, 2007.

She grew up in Winston-Salem, NC and was educated in the Winston-Salem public school system. She earned a bachelors degree from Winston-Salem Teacher's College in 1951 and was also Miss Winston-Salem Teacher's College in 1951. She received her Masters of Arts Degree in Rural Education from North Carolina A&T State University in 1956.

In 1944, Ethel was united in marriage to Doctor Eugene M. Hodges of Norfolk, VA and to this union one daughter was born, Sondra Hodges-Greene.

Mrs. Anderson was a devoted educator who taught for thirty-four years in the state of North Carolina and retired from the Guilford County Public School System in June 1984.

During her teaching career, she was nominated for the Terry Sanford Award because of her diligence and perseverance in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding of how to assist the youth in the achievement of their potential.

She was a member of United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church until her health began to fail.

"Ethel Ruth", as she was customarily called by most of her friends, loved a good game of "Pinochle" and being surrounded by children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 23 years, Lowden Anderson; and one sister, Arnita Hall of Michigan.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Sondra (William) Greene; one grandson, Donald Lee Adams, Jr.; and a great-granddaughter, Tamia Adams of the home; one great-grandson, Nesta Robert Adams of Winston-Salem, NC; great-granddaughter, Samara Adams; a great-great granddaughter of Sacramento, CA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at Noon Friday, December 7, 2007 from the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Prince Raney Rivers officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until Noon on Friday at the Church.
