Mrs. Emma Davis Harper ended her earthly journey on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, after a long and fruitful life well-lived. She was born in Forsyth County, North Carolina on October 6, 1927. She was raised by Will and Ruby Gaither. They later moved to Atlanta, Georgia where she spent most of her formative years. In the ensuing years, she would return to Winston-Salem and marry Roscoe Davis, Sr. To that union, two boys, Roscoe Jr. and Charles, were born. Her boys were her greatest joy in life and she was a devoted mother. Later in life she married Richard Harper (now deceased).
After a career spanning 30 years with the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools, Mrs. Harper retired as a supervisor over cafeterias. In recent years, she loved to marvel at the fact that she had been retired more years than she had worked.
Mrs. Harper was a faithful member of Goler Memorial AME Zion Church for over sixty years. She served in many capacities in support of various ministries including, the Ideal Club, the Parent Body of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society, and the Stewardess Board. She was actively and tirelessly engaged in supporting all ministries of the church until declining health became a limiting factor.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Allen Clowney and Aldine Clinard; as well as her beloved son, Charles A. Davis, Sr. She leaves not to mourn, but to cherish many memories, a beloved son, Roscoe Davis, Jr. (Arcenia); one daughter-in-law, DeVé Davis; four grandchildren, Eric Davis (Teresa), Tifani Gilliam (Clifton), Charles Davis, Jr. (Benita), and Amber Petree (Christopher); a sister, Joretha Jackson; a nephew, David Ingram; a niece, Katrina Blake; and ten great-grandchildren.
THERE WILL BE NO PUBLIC VIEWING.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Thursday, May 19, 2022 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. George C. Banks officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
