Obituary

Mrs. Elva Watts Johnson went on to be with her God on Monday afternoon, June 10, 2013 at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center.

"Ms. Elva" was a retired elementary school teacher in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system. One of her fondest memories of her teaching experience was of her Carver Crest School dance group, "The Dancing Dolls". Elva was a 1948 graduate of Winston-Salem Teacher's College and she went on to get her Master's degree in Teaching from NC A&T College.

Elva met Melvin E. Johnson in 1954 and the two married on January 28, 1961. Elva and Melvin were devoted life partners and best friends for 59 years.

After retiring in 1983, Elva served as a Meals-on-Wheels volunteer for many years. She also was active in her church, serving on community outreach and volunteer ministries, and an active and loyal member on the WSSU Alumni Association until her health failed her.

She was preceded in death by her parents and all of her siblings.

Elva is survived by her husband, Melvin E. Johnson of the home; a devoted "daughter-niece", Rosalyn Shelton of W-S, NC; 2 great-nephews, Juleen (Carla) Parker, Sr. and son, Juleen, Jr. of the greater DC area and Norman Shelton and his daughter, Maia N. Blevins of W-S, NC; a loving great-niece, DanElysa "Dani" Smith-Dixon and her children, Jordan, Ameja, and Gregory, Jr. "AJ" of Kernersville, NC; niece, Sandra McGee (Andre) Lowe of Detroit, MI; 2 step-children, Mary (Becky) Johnson of Waldorf, MD and Howard (Diane) Johnson of Clarksville, TN; daughter-in-law, Mozelle Johnson of W-S ,NC; brother and sister-in-law, Manuel (Mabel) Johnson of Walkertown, NC; her Saint Andrews United Methodist Church Family, particularly her very special friend, Mary Jackson; life-long friend, Martha S. Riley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Ronnie E. Roseboro officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 1:30pm until 2pm on Saturday at the Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to her church, Saint Andrews UMC, 1840 Butler St. W-S, NC 27107 in her memory.
