Today we gather to honor and celebrate the life of Ella Mae Self, who touched the hearts of everyone she encountered with her kindness, love and generous spirit.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ella Mae Self after a brief illness on June 22, 2025. Ella Mae was born on February 18, 1951 to Tecora Tidwell and Willie Davis.

She was married to her high school sweetheart Donell Self. She attended Anderson High School, Class of 1969. She was a treasured and devoted employee with the Winston Salem Police Department for 14 years. Previous employment was with Winston Salem State University for 30 years and Baptist Hospital for 7 years.

She was preceded in death by her grandson, Malilk Raekwon Glenn.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Tiffany Self (Marvin McDaniel); granddaughter, Ranajah Self; great granddaughter, Malyaiah Self; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Thursday, July 3, 2025 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Thursday at the Chapel.
