Mr. Edward Gunthrope, Jr., "Goodie", 72, was born July 16, 1946 in Great Falls, SC to Edward and Mary Gunthrope. He attended Elizabeth Heights High School, studied and finished computer courses at Forsyth Technical Community College (FTCC), and later fulfilled employment with Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company, serving 28 years. "Goodie" was a Union Shop Steward for 25 years "local #178T" at Brown & Williamson, now known as Reynolds American. In the early 70's he worked at ITT Grinnel and Burlington Finishing Company.
"Goodie" was a great husband, father, grandfather, provider, and an avid golf player. He placed first in many tournaments as well as participating in many other sports. He played basketball at numerous recreation centers around the city and enjoyed bowling as a member of The Rolling Aces Bowling Club. "Goodie" served his community well by volunteering for Crosby Golf Tournaments and The National Black Repertory Theatre Festival. He was a well-known man who loved his family dearly.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Bernie Richburg and Freddie Lynn.
He leaves to cherish the legacy of love and many great memories to his devoted wife, Linda Vaughn Gunthrope; two sons, Deron "Tink" (Carroll) Gunthrope of W-S, NC and Edward Gunthrope, III "EJ" of Bowie, MD; five grandchildren, A'leah Gunthrope, Ayomide Brown, Kayin Gunthrope, Zuri Gunthrope, and Khai Gunthrope; three brothers, Tyrone Gunthrope of Salisbury, NC, Ricky (Connie) Gunthrope of Chicago, IL, and Lonnie (Barbara) Gunthrope of Winnsboro, SC; five sisters, Patsy Gunthrope of Lancaster, SC, Emma Richburg of Chester, SC, Jennie (Ben) of Charlotte, NC, Doretha Durham and Teresa Lynn both of Salisbury, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many devoted relatives and friends too numerous to name but who loved him dearly.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm Friday, January 25, 2019 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Erwin Beal officiating. The family visitation will be held from 1:30pm until 2:00pm on Friday at the Chapel.
