IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Edward "Buck"
Joyner, Sr.
December 6, 2017
Edward "Buck" Joyner, Sr. was born October 26, 1949, in Winston-Salem, NC and departed this life on December 6, 2017 in Hampton, VA. He was the third child born to the late Edward and Imogene Joyner. Ed began his education in Winston-Salem public schools, receiving his diploma from Parkland High School. His basketball talent led him to Florida Memorial College where he played on the team and received a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education and Special Education.
Buck's college coaching legacy began in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) alongside his little brother Steve at Johnson C. Smith University in 1987. This laid the foundation for an ultra-successful run of Joyner men who have been championship coaches throughout the years. In 1993, the Tigers of Saint Paul's College hired Ed as head coach. During his first stint at Saint Paul's, he led the school to its most successful run in its history and its first national ranking. In 2000, Buck became the head coach at Livingstone College. After leaving Livingstone, he finished his head coaching duties at Saint Paul's College, but did not leave the game for too long. He joined the staff at Livingstone under James Stinson and won two CIAA championships. For the last two years, Buck has still been impacting the game, serving as an assistant coach at Hampton University and supporting his son, Edward "Lil Buck" Joyner, Jr.
While at Saint Paul's, he met Yvonne Dupree. They were married in 2001 and she has been his rock for the last sixteen years. Buck departed this life getting ready for the one thing he always loved: coaching basketball.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Imogene Joyner; and his brother, Ray Joyner.
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; daughter, Rhea Joyner; son, Edward B. Joyner, Jr. (Aerian); brother, Stephen Joyner, Sr. (Narell); sister, Judy Harper (Ed); five grandchildren, Jamail, EJ, Tajir, Andrew, and Leilah; two great-grandchildren, Isaiah and Elias; honorary son, Mario (YaYa); four honorary grandchildren, RJ, Mario, Jr., Yasmin, and Mason; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, December 15, 2017 at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Friday at the Church.
