Edmund Earl Thompson (nicknamed Skippy) was born in Hamilton, the capital of Bermuda on December 19, 1925. Edmund Earl was the seventh of eight children born to John-Henry Thompson of St. Eustatius and Gwendolyn (Beard) Thompson of St. Kitts. His mother was a homemaker and his father delivered lumber for the Ingham-Wilkinson Lumber Company of Bermuda.
As a young boy Edmund Earl loved to take care of the animals on the family's small farm and helped his father with deliveries. He also showed a strong interest in astronomy, and even up to his last days he enjoyed watching the Discovery Channel or his collections of DVD's on the latest space and intergalactic discoveries. Upon graduating from Central School he was drafted into the Army of His Majesty Service of England under the Bermuda Militia Artillery. After WWII, Edmund took various jobs for a few years and being young developed a strong desire to see what was beyond the shores of the 19 mile island. His older brother Clarence wanted him to stay in Bermuda to work with him as a mason, but he decided to travel to the United States with his other brother Percival. Edmund and his brother traveled to various cities and states, but Harlem, New York won their hearts and the two close brothers decided to make Harlem their second home. In 1950 he met his wife Helen Simons at her cousin's wedding. Edmund and Helen were married on September 21, 1952 at St. Martin's Episcopal Church on Lenox Avenue in Harlem. From this union four daughters were born: Earleen, Heleen, Idaleen and Darleen.
In 1953, Edmund was hired as a bricklayer for Wildman and Bernhard Construction Company. He worked on famous skyscrapers such as the Pan-Am building and The World Trade Center. Edmund was employed by them until he retired in December of 1990 and has resided in Winston-Salem North Carolina since 1991. He was also a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church of Winston-Salem NC.
