Obituary

Edith Jewell Smith died at her home Wednesday, November 11, 2015 of natural causes at the age of 66. Ms. Smith is survived by her nephew, Ronald Baldwin of Charlotte, NC.

From a young age, Ms. Smith developed an interest in the medical field and pursued a career in nursing. Ms. Smith earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and a Bachelor in Science in Nursing both from Winston-Salem State University, an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing from Forsyth Technical Community College, had studied counselor education at NC A&T University, and was a certified substance abuse counselor for HIV, Death and Dying. She had been working in the nursing industry for the past forty-five years which included working at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem State University, Charter Behavioral Services and Old Vineyard Behavioral Health Services. She was a member of Nau Tau Zeta Sorority and Chi Etta Chi Sorority.

Ms. Smith was selected as a Professional Member of the Biltmore Who's Who Executive and Professional Registry, recognizing her commitment in excellence in Healthcare. Having a motto of always remembering her patients as her reason for her being, as well as giving them the utmost respect, and adding some humor to her nursing care with her peers, she said, "I love taking care of people and being a people person. I enjoy doing for people." Her motto carried over to her personal life as well as she very much enjoyed caring for and supporting her family, friends and colleagues.

Ms. Smith was a member of Hanes Memorial CME Church and served the church in many capacities, including the Missionary Circle.

Memorial services will be held at 2:30pm Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Hanes Memorial CME Church, 819 N. Highland Ave. W-S, NC with Reverend Clarence W. Cox, III officiating. The family visitation will be held from 1:30pm until 2:30pm on Tuesday at the Church.

At her request, Ms. Smith will be cremated. Her ashes will be housed in the Columbarium at Evergreen Cemetery. Ms. Smith was a breast cancer survivor and battled diabetes for a good part of her adult life. The family requests that in lieu of flowers please make a contribution to the Susan G. Komen Foundation or the American Diabetes Association.
