Obituary

Mr. Earl Robert Lattimore, Jr., son of Earl R. Lattimore, Sr., and Mary Rhodes Lattimore, passed on Thursday, May 22, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

A lifelong resident of W-S, NC, he was born on April 24, 1944.

He attended Atkins High School and entered the U.S. Army in1966 where he achieved the rank of Master Sergeant. On active duty, Earl served in the Vietnam War, the Republic of Korea and the United States which was followed by 17 years in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was employed by R.J. Reynolds in the Department of Transportation for 30 years. He enjoyed his work and often spoke fondly of actresses Shirley Temple and Kathryn Crosby and other well-known personalities such as Vernon Jordan and Secretary of Labor Juanita Kreps with whom he traveled. He participated with Veteran Affairs, the Boy Scouts of America, Youth of America, and First Waughtown Baptist Church. He enjoyed swimming, building and repairing small machines and had a love for people, cars and sports.

Earl adored his family and enjoyed grilling on their barbecue pit and going to family reunions. His wife, Minister Phyllis D. Clark Lattimore, Registered Nurse at Forsyth Hospital, and his parents preceded him into Heaven.

He is survived by sons, Loren C. Lattimore and Jordan E. Lattimore of W-S; sisters, Alice R. Rhodes of W-S and Caroline L. "Judy" Lattimore of Durham; cousins, Keir Rhodes, Elsie Blackman of W-S, Linda R. Brasier, Pamela Brasier of NYC, Shawn Brasier of Tokyo, Danielle Rhodes of Charlotte; in-laws, Carol and Sim Hargrave, Kay and Joseph Johnson of Midway, Marie and Darryl Clark of Flat Rock, Robbie Verdell, of Lansing, MI, Paulette and Rufus Becote of Raleigh; extended family, Clara B. Gaines, Mrytle Hairston, Buford Foote, Bobbie Russell, Catrice Miller, Patricia Martin, Laverne Gaither, Norman Williams, all of W-S, Leartis Martin of Charlotte, Douglas Garrett of Greenville, SC, Maxine Mason of Durham; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A service of triumph will be held at 12noon Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at First Waughtown Baptist Church, 838 Moravia St., W-S, NC 27107, with Pastor Dennis W. Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 11am until 12noon on Wednesday at the Church.
