Obituary

Dwight Eugene Smoot, 72, was born on August 7, 1951 to Holloway Smoot Jr and Jannie Caldwell Smoot in Winston-Salem, NC. He was called to his eternal rest with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 29, 2024, after a very brief stay in hospice.

Mr. Smoot was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public Schools. He was a 1969 graduate of Carver Senior High School. He and his brother, Reginald "Reggie" Smoot were a singing sensation at Carver. Years before the debut of American Idol, they were the kings of talent shows. In high school they were known as much for their hilarious antics as their vocals, therefore, they were dubbed the Smothers Brothers. Mr. Smoot was also an athlete and played on the football team as a defensive linebacker. Football continued to be one of his passions, as he was an avid fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. After high school, he eventually enlisted and served in the United States Marine Corps. Much later in life, he worked at Sunoco Display and Packaging in Rural Hall for seven years before the onset of the pandemic which posed a health challenge.

Mr. Smoot was a faithful member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. He served as the Sunday School Assistant Superintendent and spent hours each week studying upcoming lessons. His distinctive baritone was like a salve to the congregation as he sang with the Male Chorus and Spiritual Choir. He was also part of the Prayer Ministry. Mr. Smoot received several "Excellence in Service" certificates and was recognized as the "Man of the Year" for his extraordinary commitment to the church and steadfastly fighting the good fight of faith.

Mr. Smoot was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Minister Reginald Smoot; and his devoted wife of 19 years, Myra Porter Smoot.

He leaves to cherish loving memories: son, Dwight "DJ" Holland; daughter, Kalli Pettigrew of Atlanta, GA; three grandsons, Kwest Boxley, Kueben Boxley of Atlanta, GA, and Khalil (Michala) Rynes of Greensboro, NC; one great-grandson, Titan Rynes of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Robbie Smoot and Renae Smoot; two brothers, Frederick "Ricky" (DeHavia) Smoot of Virginia and Robert Smoot of West Virginia; stepsons, Rico Porter and Charles Porter; sisters-in-law, Minister LaVerne Smoot, and Robin Pendleton of Delray Beach, FL; step-grandchildren, Devon Plater, Saharia Porter, Kedrick Gibson and Antwain Porter; step-great-grandchildren, Antwain "AJ" Porter, Jr., Sa'Miyah Evans and Keyceon Gibson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Sunday, July 7, 2024 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm Monday, July 8, 2024 at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.  Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00noon on Monday at the Church.
