Brother Dwight Lacy Jones was born July 3, 1933, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and departed this life on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. He is the son of the late Reverend Lacy and Lillie Knight Jones of Cumberland County. He was the seventh of nine children born to this union.

Dwight grew up in Cumberland County and was educated at the three-room Magnolia Elementary School before graduating from Chestnutt High School in 1955. While in high school, he drove a school bus, played on the basketball team, and sang in the glee club. Following graduation, Dwight matriculated to North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Dwight was married to Sarah Hastings, who preceded him in death in 2021. He was also preceded in death by his siblings John, Victoria, Rhunell, Oliver, Enzie, Pecolia, and Valerea Jones.

Known as a genuinely dapper dresser, Dwight worked for several years as a store decorator at Collins Department Store, creating the store’s window displays. He later worked at Charlotte Pipe and Foundry Company, from which he retired.

Dwight enjoyed a beautiful life with family and friends, including traveling to sporting events across the country. He was especially fond of the Dallas Cowboys, for whom his brother-in-law, Pettis Norman was a longtime team member. He and his wife, Sarah, were avid sports fans who also attended the Kentucky Derby and many Charlotte Hornets and Carolina Panthers games. Dwight could often be found working in his yard, maintaining a meticulous lawn and taking great pride in keeping their home in excellent condition.

At an early age, Dwight joined Mount Olive Baptist Church and later moved his membership to First Baptist Church of Fayetteville, North Carolina. Upon moving to Charlotte, North Carolina, Dwight united with Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, where he sang in the church choir and participated in the brotherhood ministry.

Dwight leaves to cherish his memory his daughters, Wanda (Mitch) of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Annette (Gary) Smith of Sanford, North Carolina; two bonus daughters, Teresa Ray and Melissa (David) Taylor of Charlotte, North Carolina; one sister, Portia J. (Oscar) Covington of Glen Allen, Virginia; grandchildren; two bonus granddaughters, Cédra and Chloē Russell; and a host of nephews, other relatives, and dedicated friends.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 12:00noon Wednesday, September 16, 2016 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 3400 Beatties Ford Rd., Charlotte, NC 28216. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12:00noon on Wednesday at the Church.
