Dorothy Walls Brooks Ross, formerly of 3519 Fieldstone Dr., passed away Thursday evening, January 8, 2015 at Danby House Assisted Living in Winston Salem, NC. Mrs. Ross, a Winston Salem native, was the first born of James and Julia Walls. Her sister Margaret preceded her in death.
A graduate of Atkins high school, she attended Teachers College (now WSSU) and completed her studies in the Chicago University System. Mrs. Ross worked briefly on the New York stage as an understudy; for the federal government in Washington, DC; for the Illinois Labor Department; and taught in the Chicago public school system. But she was most proud of her sixteen year employment with the Winston-Salem Housing Authority's Turnkey III program. She supervised the home buyer services department. The program enabled low and moderate income families to buy their first home. At the time of her retirement, eight hundred and eleven families were buying their first home, and this filled her with joy.
Before her health began to fail Mrs. Ross was an active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, the corresponding secretary and later President of the Top Ladies of Distinction, a Board of Directors member of Senior Services, a member of the Citizens Budget Advisory Council, and a prescient Judge for the North-East ward. Mrs. Ross was a smart, witty, classy lady.
Those left to lovingly remember her include: daughter Denise (C. Ricky) Eaton; grandsons, Reco Eaton, Erick Eaton, and Rodney Ross; granddaughters, Huestyn Eaton and Davida Smith; great grands, Kailyn Baker-Smith, Scyona Baker, Khloe Eaton, and Ambrym Eaton; niece, Andrea Williams; cousin, James (Willie Mae) Grace, Sr.; caregiver Ann Carroll; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Rev. Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1pm on Wednesday at the Church.
In lieu of flowers please give your time or donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
The family extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Danby House.
