Dorothy Drake McCarthy left earth for her heavenly home on July 29, 2020. Affectionately known as "Dot" by her family and friends, she was born one of twelve children to the late Walter Dove and Mae Etta Jones Drake.  Dorothy was born in Fayetteville, NC and graduated from E.E. Smith High School where she was an outstanding athlete in basketball and possessed a phenomenal voice.  She later attended Bennett College where she received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education.  Dorothy taught 11 ^th and 12 ^th grade English.  Along with the help of her students they published the yearbooks for Atkins and Paisley High Schools in Winston-Salem, NC.  Dorothy also taught at North Forsyth High School until she retired.

Dorothy was a faithful member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church.  She was involved in several ministries including the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society.  Dorothy was a member of the Trustee Board and the Cathedral Choir.  Dorothy loved to sing and was a member of the A.L. Cromwell Ensemble.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Haywood; her daughter, Beverly; sisters, Mary Belle Drake, Rozelle Montgomery, Laureen Smith, Pauline Hughes, and Rutha Holmes; and her brothers, Walter B. Drake, Earl Drake, Reverend W. D. Drake, Francis Drake, Paris Drake, and Wilma Drake.

She is survived by her daughter, Debra McCarthy Jarrett; cousin, Charles Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at Russell Funeral Home.

Private services will be held Wednesday, August 5, 2020.  Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
