Mrs. Doris Essie Pierce Plowden, 80, was born December 6, 1933 in Woodland, NC to Mr. W.C. and Mrs. Pauline Anderson Pierce. She departed this life on April 20, 2014 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

Doris attended Woodland Elementary School where she was salutatorian of her class. She was a graduate of W.S. Creecy High School. She also attended Elizabeth City State University.

In 1945, Doris joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Woodland, NC under the leadership of Rev. Hart. Then, in 1961 she transferred to Brown Memorial Baptist Church in Brooklyn, NY under the leadership of Rev. Watkins. Later, in 1972, she joined Sandy Branch Baptist Church in Roxboro, NC under the leadership of Rev. Edwards. Until her death, she was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Melvin Pierce; and three sisters, Mrs. Opal Moncrief, Mrs. Marjorie Daughtry, and Mrs. Alease Ottman.

She leaves to cherish her memories her devoted husband of 15 years, Bishop Bennie Plowden; her children, Barry J. Canada of Winston-Salem, NC and Steven C. Canada of El Paso, TX; grandchildren, Stacy Chanel, Jessica Canada, and Cameron Canada; two great grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Pierce Houston of Camp Springs, MD; three sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Jones, Juanita Golden, and Geraldine Newell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2pm Monday, April 28, 2014 at New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Daryl Napper officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 1pm until 2pm on Monday at the Church.
