Obituary

Mrs. Doris Norwilla Brown Kimbrough transitioned to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Monday, May 25, 2020. Her last days were spent surrounded by family.

She will be most remembered as the matriarch of the Kimbrough Family. Commonly called Ms. Kimbrough, Ms. Kim, Granny, Granny K, Ma Kim, and Ms. Doris, what was for certain was that her matriarchal leadership and wisdom was infectious to all who had the pleasure of meeting her.

She devoted her life to her children and actively participated in PTA as well as attended all school activities. Not only was she the biological mother of 10, she was also active in her community and always accepted the role to nurture, mentor, and educate unbiasedly to everyone. Although she did not follow the traditional path of education, her intellectual insight surpassed all defined levels of learning.

Born and raised in Winston Salem, NC, Mrs. Kimbrough will most be known for her angelic soprano tone. Singing was her passion. She went from singing in church choirs, to being instrumental in organizing the singing group "The Ebernettes". She traveled the world ministering through song from her God given talent. Her tenacity for life did not stop there. She worked as the best southern cook for Forsyth Park Child Development Center for 25 years and served as a counselor for the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem (HAWS), became president of Healy Towers Independent Living facility for more than 11 years, and co-authored a memoire of her childhood entitled "Allergic to Gray Hair".

Among her many accomplishments, one most notable was that she was also the grandmother of the first African-American Sheriff of Forsyth County, Sheriff, Bobby F. Kimbrough Jr. This made her extremely proud and honored that her grandson made history and she was able to witness this glorious event.

Mrs. Kimbrough was preceded in death by her mother, Janie D. Brown; her husband, Paul Kimbrough; her sons, Leslie Kimbrough and Charles Kimbrough.

She leaves to cherish her sweet memories, Lawrence Brown, Bobby Kimbrough Sr. (Viola), Doris Evans (Theodore-preceded), Landis Kimbrough (Cleo), Alford Kimbrough (Virginia), Michael Kimbrough (Gloria), Kayyum Allah Kimbrough, Denise Gillis (Larry); and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A viewing will be held from 12:00noon until 5:00pm Friday, May 29, 2020 at Russell Funeral Home.

Private services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2020.  Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery.
