Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Doris Ann Jackson Joyner. She went on to be with the Lord on February 19, 2025.  Writing about a woman as multi-faceted as Doris Ann is impossible.  She was at first a daughter to Bishop Walter Joseph Jackson and Mother Roxieanna Mashack Jackson, born October 14, 1951, in Winston-Salem.  She grew up the knee baby to her siblings, Vickie Jean, Lewis, Walt Jr, and Edna. Time moved on and she became the phenom and tutor that was "Aunt Dot", beloved by each generation of her nieces and nephews. She went off to North Carolina A&T, her Aggieland, and there she made lifelong friends and met her sweetheart, Wilbert Joyner.

Doris and Wilbert would go on to have a marriage spanning more than four decades, but if you'd asked her, it still wouldn't have been long enough.  Over the course of that love story, they made their family home in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.  After moving into the Stonewall community, she added the mantle of nurturing mother to Wilbert, Jr. and Kasey. She'd work for more than thirty years as a tireless educator in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. She started as a 4th Grade Teacher before shifting to Title 1 teaching and eventually Curriculum Coordination. She would retire as an Assistant Principal at Sherwood Forest Elementary.

Doris did all that while being a prayer warrior and a Spirit-filled, true believer in Christ. Mother Joyner was a beacon of light and pillar of her church home, New Bethlehem Holiness Apostolic Church. She was a true church hat lady who also wore many "hats," from choir director, Sunday School teacher, Vacation Bible School organizer, Missionary, and too many others to name.  She was steadfast, always having the heart of the church in mind and the goal of keeping the church doors open.

One of her favorite titles came later in life as she proudly became the doting, popcorn and sweets loving Grandma to her lights, Kyrie Miles, Nova Nailani Rae, and Ava Rhys. Saying all of this, you still miss out on her wit, the joy of her laughter, the beauty of her smile, the kindness of her heart and the wisdom of her words.  It was her encouraging spirit and laughter that made her dear friends wherever she went.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Bishop and Mother Jackson; her siblings, Edna, Lewis, and Walter Jackson; and her sister-in-law, Linda Jackson.

She is survived by her two children, Wilbert, Jr. (Jennie) and Kasey Joyner-Thompson (Marlyn); grandchildren, Kyrie, Nova, and Ava; sister, Vickie Kyle (Johnny); sisters-in-law, Marlene Jackson, Cora Joyner and Tena Bullock; brother-in-law, Lee Joyner (Jean); precious nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins.  She will be missed tremendously by all who knew her, especially her family, her church members, neighbors and friends.

The Celebration of Life service will be held at 1:30pm Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at the Volger Funeral Chapel at Forsyth Memorial Park. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park.  The family visitation will be held from 12:30pm until 1:30pm on Tuesday at the Chapel.
