Doris Humphrey Davenport Ferree transitioned to her heavenly home on September 5, 2017. She was born in Dallas, NC, daughter of Blair and Verna Humphrey. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Aaron Davenport; and a son, Kevin Davenport.
She completed her college undergraduate work at Bennett College, Greensboro, NC, (where she was named to "Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges & Universities") and graduate work at Fairleigh Dickerson University in Teaneck, NJ and Columbia University in New York, NY. Doris worked as a medical technologist at St. Luke Medical Center in New York, NY and as a microbiologist at Met Path Laboratories in Teterboro, NJ. She was a member of The American Society of Microbiologists.
Much of her adult life was spent in New York and New Jersey. Upon her marriage to Dr. James W. Ferree, Sr. in 1994, she moved to Winston Salem, NC.
She was a faithful and active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she served as chairperson of the Worship Committee and Church Directory, Lay Delegate to Annual Conference, member of the Church Council, Finance Committee, Nomination Committee, Sunday School, Grief Share Committee, United Methodist Women and Offering Stewardess Board. She served as coordinator, registrar and Newsletter editor for The Southeastern Jurisdiction of Black Methodists for Church Renewal as well as offices in the Western North Carolina Conference of Black Methodists for Church Renewal.
She was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., The Links, Inc., The Chums, Inc., National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women, Inc., Bennett College Alumnae Chapter of Winston-Salem, The Holidays, Inc. Bridge Club, Brooks Landing Neighborhood Bridge Club plus two other bridge groups. She enjoyed her volunteer work with Meal on Wheels and Samaritan Ministries. She enjoyed traveling, which included most of the United States as well as most of the continents.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband Dr. James W. Ferree, Sr.; daughter, Kimberly Davenport Jackson; stepdaughter, Jaffee Ferree (Darrell) White; and stepson; James Ferree Jr.; four grandchildren, Briana Jackson, James (Shannon) Ferree III, Sierra (Philip) Ashe and Nia White; and three great grandchildren, Jordyn Ashe, Ariana Ruth, and Brian Ruth Jr.
The celebration of her life will be held at 12:00noon Monday, September 11, 2017 at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Reverend Donald Jenkins officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12:00noon on Monday at the Church.
