Obituary

Mrs. Doris Virginia Black Brown, 85, of Winston-Salem returned home to her Heavenly Father and was reunited with her beloved husband, James Othello Brown, on Wednesday, August 17, 2016. Doris was born on December 4, 1930 to the late Walter B. Black, Sr. and Rosa McNair Black in Winston-Salem, NC.

Mrs. Doris Black Brown was a graduate of Winston-Salem State University (Winston-Salem Teachers College) and did post-graduate study at Columbia University and UNC Greensboro. She briefly taught at Alabama State University in Montgomery, AL, and the Mecklenburg County Schools before retiring from the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School System after more than 35 years of teaching. She was a member of Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church before joining her husband, James, at Grace Presbyterian Church and periodically attended Turning Point Church. While attending Teachers College, she was introduced into the Zeta Phi Beta sorority.

Survivors left to cherish those precious memories of Mrs. Brown are a loving daughter, LeVerne Rose Brown of Columbia, MD; a devoted brother, Walter B. Black, Jr. and wife Jacqueline of Kernersville; two nieces, Jacquese O. Black of Winston-Salem and Candis L. Black of Kernersville; four nephews, Walter B. (Tanja) Black, III of Winston-Salem, Perrin J. (Sophia) Black of Kernersville, Jeff (Sara) Underwood and Perrin Underwood of Montgomery, AL; one great niece, Amira D. Watson; six great nephews, Olen M. Black, Perrin J. Black, II, Jai P. Black of Kernersville, Slayton Underwood of New York, Blake Underwood and Zachary Underwood of Montgomery, AL; two brothers-in-law, Donald Davison and Jerry Davison; and several nieces and nephews of California.

Mrs. Brown's sister, Olean Black Underwood of Montgomery, AL preceded her in death.

A memorial service for Mrs. Brown will be held at a later date.

Always the teacher, she asked that any memorial gifts be made to the Winston-Salem Preparatory Academy, 1215 N. Cameron Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101 for use of student supplies, equipment, or scholarships.
