Doris Jynette Bines, a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, NC, entered the earthly journey on October 26, 1944 to Anderson Thomas Pitts and Rosa Dunlap. Doris departed for her eternal journey on Friday, March 6, 2020 after an extended period of illness.
Doris was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County public school system, graduating from Atkins High School and went on to continue her education at Miller Business College.
Spiritually, she was a very faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church and later united with St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church. Doris worked faithfully in both churches, serving on the Usher Boards and Choirs. Doris was employed by some of the best employers in Winston-Salem, NC, including the City of Winston-Salem, Winston-Salem Housing Authority, Winston-Salem Forsyth School System and the Urban League.
Doris' motto in life was "Helping Others." We can remember Doris Bines as a pillar in our community, having a voice for those who did not have that voice, but needed to be heard, worked with the WSFC System helping implement the right for Black students to choose which schools they wanted to go to. She marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the Civil Rights Movement; went to jail while fighting for what she believed was right, such as the rights for Blacks to vote. If Doris was not attending meetings or helping within the community, she was writing grants for the Project Re-entry Program. She also worked with the Prison Ministry, helping inmates to find jobs resources once released from prison.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; a son; and two cousins.
She leaves to cherish many dear and loving memories: two daughters, Tracie Bines (Kelvin Jackson), and Melvina Bines (Curtis Zeigler); one son, Steve Bines; seven sisters, Evelyn Dunlap, Lola West, Marian Wilson, Veronica Hicks, all of Winston-Salem, NC, Gloria Foxworth of Paterson, NJ and Christine Vaughn of Detroit, MI, Santra Wilson of New York; her grandchildren, Domonique Bines (Elliott Cockrell), Latoya Bell (Thomas McDaniel), Daron Bines, Sadarius Bell, John Bell, Darriel Brown, Selena Bines, Curtis Zeigler, Anthony Knight, Jahir Bines and Damien Bines; a host of great grandchildren, nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, cousins, and many other relatives, and close friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, March 13, 2020 at Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Paul A. Lowe, Jr. officiating. The family visitation will be held from 11:00am until 12noon on Friday at the Church.
