Mrs. Doretha B. Hunter, affectionately known as "Granny", quietly slipped away to receive her wings on January 29, 2016. She was born April 4, 1931 to the late Poovey and Dora Barnes.

She was a faithful member and Church Mother of New Bethlehem Holiness Apostolic Church in Winston-Salem, NC.

The matriarch Doretha lived her life to the fullest in hopes to make the best out of everything God graced her with. She was strong and resilient throughout her many years. She was a devoted Christian. She attended Teachers College where she received her nursing degree. She retired from Kate B. Reynolds Hospital. She had a beautiful voice and sang briefly with Clara Ward, Dorothy Norwood, and Albertina Walker.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Vannois Tally Hunter, one son, Tyrone; one daughter, Vannette Renee; and five brothers, Poovey, Jr., Haywood, Sr., Richard, Wadlow, and Frank Barnes.

Left to cherish many great memories are three daughters, Dovina (Nathaniel) Davis of Winston-Salem, NC, Bernadette Valarie (Thomas) Stanley of Waldorf, MD, and Rita (Michael) House of Winston-Salem, NC; she was a Mother to many; seven grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Newt (Barbara) Hunter; four sisters-in-law, Arie (Harry) Leaphart, Evelyn Hunter, Ruby Barnes, and Janet Foster; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, 1317 N. Cherry St. Winston-Salem, NC. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12noon until 1:00pm on Saturday at the Church.
