Donald Eric Washington, affectionately known by his family and friends as “Don Don”, was born on December 6, 1972 to Deborah Ann Randolph and Jerome Washington.
Donald was lovingly raised by Carl Henry Lee alongside his siblings, Carla Lee Edwards and Eugene Robinson, who remained an important part of his life. He graduated from Ballou High School in 1991. Driven by a desire to serve his country, Donald enlisted in the United States Army on August 9, 1991. He was stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama where he served as a Chemical Operations Specialist and attained the rank of Private First Class. During his military service, he earned the Army Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Parachutist Badge, and Army Driver Badge. He was honorably discharged on April 22, 1994. Also, for many years, his two best friends, Juanita Young and James McCray, Jr. remained in his life and kept in close contact with Donald.
In September 2021, Donald reunited with his high school crush, LaDonn. Together they created many lasting memories. They were married on April 11, 2025- LaDonna’s birthday. Together they resided in Winston-Salem until his untimely departure. He will truly be missed by his step-sons, Keith Eades and Isaiah Saunders.
While stationed at Fort McClellan, Donald met Pauline Wess, the mother of his children. They were united in marriage on December 18, 1992 and together they welcomed two children, Darron Michael Washington, born February 10, 1992 and India Nichole Washington, born June 23, 1993.
After his military service, Donald moved to Michigan in 1994 where he lived until 2020. Donald courageously fought a lifelong battle with diabetes. Even after losing his eyesight, he refused to let his circumstances define him.
He attended GRCC, where he earned a certificate and returned to work, demonstrating his determination and perseverance. During this time, he formed a lasting friendship with Tom Werkema, whose companionship he greatly valued.
Donald found joy in the simple things that made life meaningful. He had a deep love for soccer and was an avid fan of Go-Go music. It was common to hear the sounds of Rare Essence, and other Go-Go favorites filling his home. His infectious smile, uplifting spirit, and sense of humor brought happiness to everyone around him.
Above all else, Donald treasured his family. He was a devoted father and a proud and loving grandfather to Darron Washington, Jr. and Harmony Plair. He also adored his four nieces and nephews, taking great pride in being the fun uncle they loved spending time with.
Donald will be remembered for his strength, perseverance, kindness, laughter, and unwavering love for his family. Though he is no longer with us, the memories he created and the love he shared will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. His happy spirit and warm smile will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
