Mr. Donald DeLoss Scales, "aka D.D.", 84, of Winston-Salem NC, was born July 3, 1937. He transitioned this life peacefully at Trellis Supportive Care on February 21, 2022. He is preceded in death by his parents, LC Scales and Lois Scales Hilliard; and his brothers, Mr. James J. Scales and Mr. Leon T. Scales.
Donald was a product of the local schools. After graduating from Atkins High School, he briefly attended West Virginia State College. This was interrupted by a four-year tour of duty as an Avionics Technician with the United States Air Force. When he returned to civilian life, Donald was employed as a Firefighter at the historic #4 Fire Station in Winston-Salem, NC. While working, and some 10 years later, he returned to college where he earned a BS degree at Winston-Salem State University, a MS degree at NC A&T State University, as well as a Diploma from UNC Chapel Hill, Institute of Government for Municipal Administration and many other certifications and accolades. He was also a graduate of both the Fire and Police Academy of Winston-Salem.
Donald's work career began to move forward with his promotion to Driver Engineer; Training Specialist; Battalion Chief in charge of Training; and culminated with his appointment as the first black Fire Marshal for the City of Winston-Salem. In addition to family responsibilities, Donald found time to serve as an Adjunct Faculty member at Forsyth Technical College, as well as at the National Fire Academy, Emmetsburg MD.
Donald was a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. While able he promoted and enjoyed service under that banner. Affectionally known as Coach Scales, Donald was a passionate advocate for community youth development through sports. He spent countless hours coaching boys' softball, but the true treasure was the dreaded St. Benedict the Moor Catholic school 'Benedict Bobcats' basketball teams. As with anything that he attempted, Donald was a competitive bowler. But on the quieter side, he enjoyed playing in the church bell choir at St. Paul United Methodist Church where he was a Steward, a member of the Methodist Men, and a student at Noon Day Bible Study. Donald was also a devoted volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Mrs. Barbara Dunlap Scales of the home; brother, Anthony E. Scales (Ethel); daughters, Shelia Scales-Smith (James) of Pfafftown NC, and Donna Scales of Flint MI; grandchildren, Allen Scales of Winston-Salem, NC, Jaime Smith of Kernersville, NC, and Deirdre Scales of Flint, MI; one great-granddaughter, Jada King of Winston-Salem NC; and many extended family, friends and associates.
The Scales family would like to express sincere appreciation and gratitude for the individual caregivers and facilities that provided care for our loved one.
