Obituary

In Loving Memory of Derrick McKinney

May 15, 1971 - June 27, 2026

With hearts filled with love and cherished memories, we celebrate the life of Derrick McKinney, who peacefully departed this life on Saturday, June 27, 2026. Derrick was born on May 15, 1971, in Savannah, Georgia, to the late Rev. Lawrence McKinney and Viola McKinney.

As the son of a devoted minister, Derrick's family relocated from Savannah, Georgia, eventually making their home in St. Louis, Missouri, where he spent much of his childhood. He later settled in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, where he graduated from Mt. Tabor High School. Derrick was a hardworking and dedicated man who was gainfully employed with James E. Strates Entertainment. He was known for his quiet strength, his loyalty to those he loved, and the special place he held in the hearts of his family.

As Derrick's health declined, he was lovingly cared for by his devoted mother, Viola McKinney, until her passing. Following her death, his sister, Donna McKinney, lovingly assumed the responsibility of caring for him, faithfully remaining by his side until the Lord called him home.

Derrick was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rev. Lawrence McKinney and Viola McKinney; his grandfather, Henry Penny Isom; his grandmother, Juanita Anderson; and his birth mother, Adrienne Berry.

He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted sister, Donna McKinney; two brothers, Dwayne Berry and Darryl Ellison; four nephews, Tyler, Triston, Tyriq, and Tyler, Jr.; one niece, Savannah; five great-nieces, Saniya, Skyler, Serenity, Summer, and A'Aiylani; three aunts, Debra, Joyce, and Alvonia; two cousins, Mike and Levi, Jr.; and a host of other relatives and dear friends whose lives were blessed by knowing him.

Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we find comfort in knowing that Derrick's earthly journey has ended and that he is now at peace. His memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who loved him, and his legacy of love, strength, and perseverance will never be forgotten. "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." - Psalm 34:18

A viewing will be held from 1:00pm until 5:00pm Monday, July 6, 2026 at Russell Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 12noon Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. The family visitation will be held from 11:30am until 12noon on Tuesday at the Chapel.
