Denise Franklin, a newswoman; a seeker and teacher of truth, whether as a broadcast journalist at WXII-TV and WFDD-FM in Winston-Salem; a student pursuing a Master of Divinity; or as an empowering advocate for women and aspiring journalists; answered the call of her heavenly father on October 31, 2017.
Denise searched for stories with endless curiosity and shared them with incisive prose. Denise was dedicated to her craft; at different times in her career, she greeted listeners at 5:00 each morning and bid viewers goodnight after the 11:00 news each evening. Her storytelling took many different forms. Two of Denise's most cherished endeavors were her "Voices and Viewpoints" radio show, which shared stories of typical, yet notable local residents; and the "Modern Day Miracles" video series, where she helped ordinary people recount the ways in which they inexplicably received astonishing blessings from God. Each story that Denise shared unfolded uniquely, but with them, she strove to impart the common idea that ordinary people are always capable of extraordinary feats.
Denise was born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1958 to Joyce and Dr. Eugene Franklin. She grew up in Wichita, Kansas. Denise received a Bachelor of Arts from Wichita State University; a Master of Business Administration from Wake Forest University; and she was pursuing a Master of Divinity at Wake Forest when she passed. Denise accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and personal savior and worshipped at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem for decades.
Denise's memory will be treasured each day by her mother, Joyce Franklin of Wichita, Kansas; her father, Dr. Eugene (Kathy) Franklin of Houston, Texas; her brother, Ronald Franklin of Wichita; her daughter, Kristy (Eric) Moore of Durham; her son, Michael Jones of Winston-Salem; her granddaughters, Jasmine and Mikayla, of Durham; her niece, Ashton (Alveno) Mcphaul of Wichita; her nephew, Zachary Franklin of Wichita; as well as many extended family members, cherished friends, viewers, and listeners.
Denise's life will be celebrated at 12noon Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, NC. The family will receive visitors beginning at 11:00am on Tuesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Denise Franklin Memorial Fund, payable to the Winston-Salem Foundation. 751 W. Fourth Street, Suite 200 or online at www.wsfoundation.org
