Delois Harding was born October 30, 1941 in Chapel Hill, NC to the late Lunies and Lillian Fearrington. She passed away September 18, 2014.
She joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church at an early age where she was an active member of the Sunday school and Church Choir. Delois received her early education at Horton High School, Pittsboro, NC, graduating with honors. She further attended Southeastern Business College, Durham, NC receiving her Associates Degree in 1962. From September 1962 to June 1965 she worked as a secretary for the Carolina Times Newspaper.
On June 26, 1965, Delois and Avon Harding were married. They have two children, Robert Allen of Washington, DC and Julian Kerry of Kennesaw, GA. Delois and Avon were both lovers of music and singing, they expressed that love through the choirs at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Upon relocating to Washington, DC, Delois embarked on a rewarding career on Capitol Hill. From 1972 to 1986, she worked as a Legislative Correspondent for the Honorable Robert Nix, the Honorable Julian Dixon and the Honorable John Conyers, Jr. all of the U.S House of Representatives. Delois worked diligently in aiding Congressman Conyers and other legislators to get the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday bill signed into law in 1983.
Following the retirement of her husband in 1986, the family moved to Winston Salem, NC where she began a new career with Tyco Electronics as an Executive Secretary. She retired from Tyco in 2005. Delois and her family joined First Baptist Church of East Winston where she served as a choir member and member of several auxiliary groups. In 2006, Delois and her husband joined Red Bank Baptist Church where she served faithfully as a Deaconess, Pastor's Aide, Chair of the Scholarship Ministry and member of the Missionary Ministry and Senior Choir. Delois Harding was also a proud and dedicated charter member of the Alpha Mu Sigma Philo Affiliate of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. She served as Northeastern Region Philo President for four terms and National Philo President from 2000 to 2002.
She is survived by her two sons, Robert Harding of Washington, DC and Julian Harding (Kelly) of Kennesaw, GA; two granddaughters, Peyton Harding and Ryan Dobson; a devoted nephew/son, John Harding of Forestville, MD; a loving niece, Lavonne Fletcher (Paul) of Suffolk, VA; great-niece, Breanna Leach; God-grandson, Kirkland Durham; brother in-law, Curtis Fearrington; lifelong friend, Addie Laws; special friends, Mildred Wood, Mae Francis Frazier, Toni Painter, Maureen Thomas(Rick), Gerri Green and Helen Horton; and numerous cousins, other relatives and life-time friends.
Funeral services will be held at 12noon Friday, September 26, 2014 at Red Bank Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family visitation will be held from 10:30am until 12noon on Friday at the Church.
