Wrapped in the loving arms of her God, Dazelle Benbow Jones of 130 North Graham Avenue Winston-Salem, NC, sailed in style across the chilly Jordan River on January 26, 2017. Her earthbound journey began Thursday, April 1, 1920 in Clemmons, NC.
The wife of the late Edwin Jones, Mrs. Jones was a 1938 honor-roll graduate of Atkins High School in Winston-Salem.
A faithful member of Zion Memorial Baptist Church for more than 50 years, "Mother "Jones served as Assistant Secretary of the Missionary Circle and Secretary of the Nurses Board during her tenure. Involved in most activities at Zion, she was a member of the Sunday School Class #2 and the Wednesday Bible Study group. She was Treasurer and a founding member of the Mary Hinson Seniors, which she helped to organize in honor of her dear friend. She was also a reporter for the Forsyth County Missionary Union.
Beyond her spiritual duties, Mrs. Jones maintained a busy schedule-even before retiring from RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1980 where she was employed for 36 years. Her community activism was recognized when she was presented the Good Neighbor Award by WAAA-AM in 1958. She was an active member of the High Hopes Bowling League of North Side, along with her youngest daughter Linda, both of whom also volunteered for Meals on Wheels. The Y Activities Club also presented her with its Zeal Award in 1980.
Preceding her in death are her husband, Edwin; daughter, Paulette J. Robinson; parents, Nathaniel and Mattie Oliver Benbow; brothers, Oliver and Gilmer; and sisters, Pauline Samuel and Gila Johnson.
She is survived by her three children, Kenneth of Winston-Salem, DeOla Jones (William) Barfield of Bridgeport, CT, and Linda Shirell Jones of the home; three grandsons, two granddaughters, and great-grandchildren; two special daughters, Alfreta T. Jones and Eloise Lipscomb both of Winston-Salem, NC; if you knew her, you knew that blood wasn't always a requirement for family; thus, equally mourning her passing are too numerous to name friends, church members, and former co-workers who also enriched her life and whose lives, in turn, were enriched by her.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Joseph Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 1:30pm on Wednesday at the Chapel.
