Mr. David Spillman Tyler, Sr., 85, the son of Lincoln and Rosalee Tyler went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 20, 2008 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice. He was born in Blacksburg, SC on December 15, 1922. Mr. Tyler attended Forsyth County Schools and during his adult years he worked at Hanes Hosiery/Sara Lee where he retired after 47 years of service. He was also the owner and operator of Tyler's Barber Shop on Patterson Avenue.
In 1946, Mr. Tyler married the late Martha Oakes and was devoted to her until her death. To this union they were blessed with 6 loving children.
In 1993, he married Geneva Shaw Tyler, his dedicated wife of 14 years.
Mr. Tyler was an active and committed member of Saints Home United Methodist Church for many years until his health failed. He served on the Trustee Board and a member of the United Methodist Men.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Rubin; three brothers, Joseph Tyler, Eli Spillman and Nathell Spillman; and his step-father, Gilmer Spillman.
He leaves to cherish his wonderful memories a loving and supportive wife, Geneva Tyler; a brother Adam Spillman; children, David Tyler Jr. (Beverly) of Ypsilanti, MI, Jean Johnson of Virginia Beach, VA, Joyce Irby (Edward), Jerry Tyler, Annette Sibley all of Winston-Salem, NC and Shirley Gaither (Daren) of Walkertown, NC; four step-children, Marvin Shaw, Jr., Priscilla Kinard, Alfred Shaw and Greg Shaw (Diane); ten grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; a faithful cousin, Marie Leak and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm Friday, April 25, 2008 from the Saints Home United Methodist Church, 1390 Thurmond Street. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Park, Rural Hall, NC. The family visitation will be held from Noon until 1pm on Friday at the Church.
