On August 11, 2026, David L. Heilig, age 73, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Louise Heilig at his side. David was born on February 12, 1953, in Sailsbury, NC to the late Cindy Louise Hawkins and Robert Heilig.

In 1982-83 David met and married Louise Davis Heilig-the love of his life. They were together for 44 years until his death on August 11, 2026. He was baptized at Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church in Winston-Salem, NC under Bishop Willie Davis, Jr. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a love for being with his family and friends. He worked for the City of Winston-Salem from 1972 until he retired in 2002 after 30 years, where he was a dedicated and valued employee.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Heilig; mother, Cindy Louise Hawkins; stepson, Delano Walker; brothers, Joseph “Joe” Harris and Oscar “Rock’ Harris, Jr.; sister, Eula Mae Porter; niece, Nancy Stiller; and nephew, David Sims.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Louise Davis Walker Heilig; mother-in-law, Annie J. Davis; 7 stepchildren whom he loved dearly, Tyrone (Cindy) Walker and Keith Walker both of Winston-Salem, NC, Kennell Walker and Valerie (Cleveland) Beasley both of Petersburg, VA, Tonda (Walter) Penn of Suffolk, VA, and Vettie (Dwayne)Terry of High Point, NC; brothers, Glenn (Mary) Heilig of Salisbury, NC, and Charles (Deblyn) Heilig of Winston-Salem, NC; sisters, Brenda Sims of Winston-Salem, NC, Deloris Abbott of Salisbury, NC, and Johnnie Mae (Bary) Damon of Winston-Salem, NC; grandchildren, Cleveland (Ashley) Walker, Tamika Walker, Catarra Walker, Demarreo (Mariah) Walker, Tierra Walker, Demariana Beasley, Tyrone (Heather) Brown, Jermery (Lauren) Brent, Tawanda (Aaron) Walker, Latisha (Devanta) Penn, Shawn (Samario) Penn, Walter Penn, Jazmin Walker and Roderick (Star) Stewart; 43 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; his best buddy, Donald Ray Pelzer; a special group of card buddies, James Wright, Kenny Green, June Brewt, Ali, Kenny, and The Johnson Family; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30am Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
