On August 11, 2026, David L. Heilig, age 73, of Winston-Salem, NC passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife, Louise Heilig, at his side. David was born on February 12, 1953, in Salisbury, NC to the late Cindy Louise Hawkins and Robert Heilig.

In 1982, David met Louise Davis Heilig. They married in 1983, beginning a lifelong love story and partnership. They were together for 44 years until his death on August 11, 2026. He was baptized at Christ Rescue Temple Apostolic Church in Winston-Salem, NC under Bishop Willie Davis Jr. He grew up with a strong work ethic and a love for being with his family and friends. He worked for the City of Winston-Salem from 1972 until he retired in 2002 after 30 years, where he was a dedicated and valued employee.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Heilig; mother, Cindy Louise Hawkins; brothers, Joseph (Joe) Harris and Oscar (Rock) Harris Jr.; sister, Eula Mae Porter; father-in-law, Walter Mack Davis; stepson, Delano Walker; niece, Nancy Stiller; brother-in-law, Roosevelt Jackson; and nephew, David Sims.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Louise Davis Walker Heilig; his brothers, Glenn (Mary) Heilig of Salisbury, North Carolina, and Charles (Deblyn) Heilig of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; his sisters, Brenda Sims of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Deloris Abbott of Salisbury, North Carolina, and Johnnie Mae (Bary) Damon of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Viola Jackson; brother-in-law, Dedrick Keaton; and daughter-in-law, Michelle White.

He also leaves seven stepchildren, whom he loved dearly: Tyrone (Cindy) Walker and Keith Walker of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Kennell Walker and Valerie (Cleveland) Beasley of Petersburg, Virginia; Tonda (Walter) Penn of Suffolk, Virginia; and Vettie (Dwayne) Terry of High Point, North Carolina; his loving grandchildren, Tawanda Walker, Walter K. Penn “Man”, Cleveland Walker “Big Poo”, Tamika Walker “Mika”, Catarra Walker, Demarreo Walker “Boodaboo”, Tierra Walker, Demariana Beasley “Tutu”, Tyrone Brown “Lil Poo”, Jeremy Brent, Latisha Penn, Shawn Penn, Jazmin Walker, Roderick Stewart “Booman”, Kiana Walker “Keke”, and Delano Walker Jr. “DC”.

He was also blessed with 45 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

He further leaves to cherish his memory his mother-in-law, Annie J. Davis; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends; his best buddy, Donald Ray Pelzer; and his special group of card buddies, James Wright, Kenny Green, June Brewton, Ali, and Kenny; along with the Johnson Family; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30am Saturday, August 22, 2026 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel.
