Darrell Louise Jones Slade was born on March 22, 1951 in Louisville, KY to Dorothy Jones and Henry Owens. Darrell went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 27, 2009.
A native Louisvillian, she lived for a short while with her parents and siblings in Lexington Park, MD. She returned to Louisville to attend and graduate from Louisville's historic Central High School. After graduating from Central, she attended Jefferson Community College and Roy's Academy of Cosmetology. Upon completing Roy's, Darrell worked and managed Your Father's Mustache and The Looking Glass. She became known as one of the elite stylist in Louisville. She won several local and national hair competitions and consistently placed in the top three. Eventually, she would move to Winston-Salem, NC to be closer to her mother, whom she shared a very special relationship and friendship. She continued to excel in the field of cosmetology. She worked at Ervin's Beauty World, Conrad's Hair Gallery and Mirror Images Salon before starting Darrell's Salon of Beauty. Under Darrell's skillful leadership, the salon blossomed from a single chair operation on Reynolda Road to one of the premiere hair salons in Winston-Salem; ultimately becoming the largest salon is Winston-Salem.
Darrell rededicated her life to Jesus Christ at Mount Nebo Baptist Church in Louisville where she served faithfully in the ministry until her relocation to Winston-Salem. Upon arriving in Winston-Salem in 1981, she joined St. Peter's Church then located on Highland Avenue. Darrell began her service in ministry under the leadership of the late Bishop R.K. Hash, Sr. Her ministry continued to grow and flourish under Bishop James C. and Lady Joyce Hash. She served in the following capacities: Alter Worker, Christian Business World Association (CBWA) President, Cell Leader Charm and Etiquette Coordinator, Children's Church Teacher, Communion Worker, Deaconess, Finance Officer, Intercessory Prayer Leader, Minister-in-Training, Darrell also served as the Chair of the St. Peter's Heritage Center Board of Directors. A lifelong learner and teacher, she was an active participant in the SPWOC Bible Institute and SPWOC School of Leaders.
Darrell's passion was to convert lost souls. She was persistent in her pursuit of winning souls and making disciples. She never passed up an opportunity to speak about the goodness of God- all the world was her pulpit.
After a fervent pursuit, Darrell Jones became Darrell Slade when she met and married her husband on December 17, 1989. They served each other in marriage for 19 years. This union created a blended family of five children.
