Obituary

Daisy Lea Hinton passed away on July 11, 2013. Daisy was born on January 13, 1924 to the late David and Margaret Lea in Burlington, NC.

When she was very young, her family moved to Washington, DC and Atlantic City, NJ. At the age of five, they moved back to Burlington. She graduated from Jordan Sellers High School in 1940. Daisy received a B.S. degree from Winston-Salem Teachers College (now Winston-Salem State University) in 1944 and a Master's degree in education from NC A&T State University in 1946.

Daisy began her teaching career in Smithfield, NC. After four years, she moved back to Burlington and taught in the Alamance County Schools. While working in Burlington, she met her future husband Thomas Hinton, IV and they were married on July 5, 1952. After moving to Winston-Salem in 1955, Daisy taught third and fourth grades in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system at Columbia Heights, Lowrance and South Fork Elementary Schools. She retired from teaching in 1979. Daisy was a member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church where she was active with St. Monica's Guild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas on January 10, 2013.

She is survived by her sons, Thomas Hinton, V and David (Natalie) Hinton; three grandchildren, Danielle Hinton of Winston-Salem, David Hinton, Jr. of Richmond, Va., and Michael Hinton of Winston-Salem; sister, Julia Jordan and niece, Carolyn Jordan of Burlington; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church. The family will receive visitors after the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Hospice Palliative Care Center.
