Claferteen C. (Cook) Farrow passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at THE OAKS Rehabilitation Center, 901 Bethesda Road in Winston-Salem, NC. She was born in the city on March 6, 1917, a daughter of the late Cleveland Cook of Wilkesboro, NC and. Zula (Culp) Cook of Concord, NC.
She was united in marriage on May 10, 1947 to the late Milton T. Farrow who passed on March 25, 1973.
Claferteen attended elementary school at Kimberly Park and graduated in 1930. She attended Columbia Heights School for one year before going to Atkins High School (Cameron Avenue) where she graduated in 1934. She attended Emanuel Lutheran College (Greensboro, NC) for one semester.
She accepted the Lord Jesus as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized on December 26, 1926 at the St. Mark's Lutheran Church where she was also confirmed. In 1991, she transferred her membership to the Abiding Faith Lutheran Church (now known as the Star of Bethlehem Lutheran Church). She was an active member and served as a member of the Lutheran Women's League, a Sunday morning greeter, member of the Sunday school and a member of the Nursery Board.
Claferteen worked all of her adult life and retired in 2004. Her first job was in the Arcade Fashion Shop, where she was a stockroom clerk. During World War II, she aided the country's war effort by taking a position at the Carbon Plant as a line operator. After the War, she went to New York and took a job with the Ketchem Wholesale Drug Company. Leaving NY, she returned to Winston-Salem where she held positions in various clothing and department stores such as the Anchor Company, Thalheimer's and Spainhour's. She took a position as house keeper with the family of Mr. And Mrs. George (Alice) Cleland until she retired.
She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Thelma V. Cook; and four siblings, two sisters and two brothers, Irene Cook, Etha (Cook) Wingfield, Belverdere N. Cook and Cleveland Cook.
Claferteen is survived by her loving son, Nathan H. Cook of Jefferson City, MO; two granddaughters, Carlene Y. Cook of St. Louis, MO and Erika Y. (Cook) Aaron of Atlanta, GA; two great-grandsons, Carl L. Aaron, Jr. and Christian L. Aaron; one sister, Mildred R. Gould of St. Albans, NY; four nieces and a nephew, Rosalind (Wingfield) Hopton (Grantlin), Monica (Gould) McClendon, Luwyana Gould, Shirley Gould, Ruth Gould and Jessie "Buster" Gould; and several grand-nieces and nephews.
She greatly enjoyed reading the Winston-Salem Journal, watching television game and talk shows, listening to gospel music, dressing up and phone visiting with friends and neighbors.
A celebration of her life and homegoing will be held at 11:30am Wednesday, December 13, 2017 at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, 822 Carl Russell Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC 27101 with Reverend Fred Guldberg officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family visitation will precede the homegoing celebration at 10:00am on Wednesday at the Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to The Star of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1355 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.
